A Premium Experience

While the six (as of this writing) Disney vessels don't provide true luxury sailing (I'm talking Below Deck) there's no denying they can be more costly than other popular cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. As such, a lot of folks wonder, "Are Disney cruises worth the extra cost?" The answer depends entirely on your priorities. While I've had a great time on other cruise lines, I'd be hard pressed to not travel Disney (at least while my children are still fellow passengers). But is it the same for you? Here's my take.

What Sets Disney Cruises Apart?

Disney cruises are renowned for their exceptional service, family-friendly atmosphere, and immersive experiences. The entertainment offered on board is simply top notch. From Broadway-style shows featuring beloved Disney characters to themed parties and character meet-and-greets, the entertainment quality and quantity still amazes me after 5 trips. Those traveling with young children appreciate the age-appropriate programs designed to keep kids engaged and happy.

The ship itself is designed with families in mind, boasting spaces and "clubs" for children, teens, and adults, ensuring that everyone has a delightful time. Parents can relax at exclusive adult-only areas, while children enjoy activities that are safe and enriching. The seamless way Disney blends fun and relaxation creates an experience that is hard to match.

What are some differences between Disney and the other cruise lines?

  • Gambling: Aside from the thrill of Bingo or similar group activities, Disney ships don't have casinos.

  • Unlimited Booze: The typical "unlimited drink package" isn't available, but there are wine and beer packages, drink specials and refillable cup promotions. Overall, I'd say alcohol is usually available but isn't "pushed" as hard as other cruises.

  • Dining: I find the food on Disney cruises fantastic, but dinners are rotational - meaning you move from one themed dining room to another. Your waitstaff follows you around to each venue though, so there's still the opportunity to build a relationship while enjoying different scenery.

  • Theming: Each ship offers unique theming experiences, from pubs to rides to kids clubs, to games, decor and much more. Prepare to be exposed to all things Disney, Marvel and Star Wars onboard, including trivia and karaoke fun!

  • Kids Clubs: Are enormous, very well staffed and offer experiences (like character interactions) that can't be matched on other lines.

Overall, I'd say Disney Cruise ships are more geared toward families and provide a family-friendly atmosphere. That's not to say there aren't adults-only spaces to get away - including bars, pools and restaurants. But there's no escaping throngs of happy children dressed in Disney-wear or freshly coifed at the Bippity Boppity Boutique bouncing about on board.

The Value of Disney's Unique Offerings

So, what makes Disney cruises more expensive than their competitors? Primarily, it’s the attention to detail and commitment to quality. Disney invests heavily in creating a magical experience, from the moment you step on board to the time you return home.

Food is usually high up there compared to other lines. Staff and service are usually top notch. Ammenities and ship-board activities are plentiful and clean. And the ports of call are often unique, including private islands like Castaway Cay (an exclusive destination that offers a beach day that feels like a dream come true for those who have followed Disney's storytelling journey). As mentioned the shows and performances are unmatched.

Is a Disney Cruise Worth It for You?

The ultimate question remains: are Disney cruises worth the extra cost? If you're looking for a family-friendly experience that provides an opportunity to connect with each other- there's a lot to get here without being nickle and dimed (free soda, many free activites, reasonable souvenirs). Personally, I find a shortish trip (3-4 day itinerary) doesn't necessitate a lot of off-board excursions, which helps add value.

If you want your children to be well-entertained so you can enjoy time with your spouse / partner getting a massage at the spa, taking in a movie or enjoying a bourbon tasting, Disney gives you a great shot at those moments.

If you're priority is on the thrills of gambling, adult-oriented partying or you only tolerate being around a younger crowd (i.e. kids and parents with school-age children) it probably won't be worth it.

If your budget is tight, you can still have a great time on the other cruise lines, even with kids! But if you are on the fence, it might be worth taking a little extra time between vacations or saving extra hard to experience a Disney Cruise.

In conclusion, while Disney cruises do come with a premium price tag, they also deliver an extraordinary experience that’s designed to cater to families and Disney fans alike. Whether you’re sailing through the Caribbean or exploring the Mediterranean, the enchantment of Disney signifies that your vacation is about more than just reaching a destination; it’s about creating cherished memories with loved ones.
